Baby, it’s going to get colder outside

If you think it’s cold now, just wait until Thursday and Friday come around.

According to the National Weather Service in Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley, another cold front that will pass through the Rio Grande Valley on Thursday bringing in arctic air with freezing to near freezing temperatures.

The frontal passage on Thursday will also bring dangerous winds chills for Thursday night into Friday morning across the region.

The NWS reports those dangerous wind chills will bring “feels like” temperatures in the upper 20s across the Valley Thursday into Friday. Friday night lows will be in the low to mid 40s. Daytime highs on Friday will be in the mid-50s.

And it could possibly be much colder, according to the NWS, which stated in its forecast “There is the potential for the forecast to change and be colder than what is currently predicted.”

Because these freezing to near freezing temperatures could damage or kill young tender tropical vegetation, residents should cover or move these plants indoors Thursday and Friday night.

The cold could cause minor hypothermia to persons exposed without adequate protection. Several layers of light insulating clothing and a hat are recommended to keep warm.

“Very low wind chills will cause hypothermia for those exposed to prolonged periods of time without protection, and serious injury or death could result,” the NWS reports.

In preparation for the colder weather, the NWS said residents should ensure space heaters or heating systems are in good operating condition, and repair or replace if not operating safely.

Persons susceptible or exposed to chill should be prepared to wear several layers rather than a single jacket, forecasters said.
