A man is under arrest after he brought an AR-15 to Rio Grande City High School on Tuesday, according to a news release.
The Rio Grande City Grulla Independent School District Police Department arrested a person who has not been identified at 4:45 p.m. after security guards at the school entrance saw the AR-15 in his front seat, the school district said on Facebook.
The district said the man claimed he was at the school to pick up his sister.
District officials said the security guard notified district police who arrested the man.
“It is important to note that, at no point in time, were our children in danger, as this individual did not come in close or direct contact with any of our precious students or staff,” the district stated.
Superintendent Adolfo Pena Jr. said in the social media statement that the district and board of trustees commended police and the security guard “for their vigilance, strict implementation of our new security measures, and keeping our students and staff safe.”
“This is, yet, more affirmation of the effectiveness of RGCCISD’s newly implemented security measures aimed at protecting the safety of all our precious family, which include quick response times by both our security guards and district police department personnel,” the district stated.
The district did not immediately release any other information about the incident.
