The city of Pharr announced the appointment of an acting police chief following the resignation of former Chief of Police Andy Harvey on Monday.

Juan Gonzalez, who previously served as deputy chief of police on the Pharr Police Department’s command staff, was named acting chief of police in a news release the city issued late Monday evening.

The Monitor initially confirmed the news after speaking with Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez Monday evening.

“We thank Andy for his dedicated work to the City of Pharr during his two years as Chief, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Hernandez said in the release.

Harvey resigned from his post Monday — about a week after he resigned as city manager.

He announced his departure as city manager during the Sept. 6 regular called meeting of the board of commissioners. Harvey later said he made the decision to focus more on his position as chief of police.

But he quit his post, which he had held for just over two years, six days after his first resignation.

Gonzalez will serve as acting chief of police while the city begins its search for new candidates.
