McAllen city leaders unveiled a new fleet of buses Thursday morning in a ceremony highlighting their efforts to better Metro McAllen’s services in the area.

The eight new buses, 35-foot Gillig Low Floor vehicles, were revealed at McAllen Metro Central Station at 1501 W. U.S. Highway 83, before members of the city commission and administration.

According to the city, the buses were added to Metro’s fleet to “keep its passengers on the move.”

McAllen spokesperson Xochitl Mora said Thursday that the buses are enough to add new vehicles to every Metro route.

She also said the cost of the buses was around $3.6 million and was funded by the Federal Transit Administration and the Texas Department of Transportation.

The fleet additions come as the city continues efforts to upkeep conditions in McAllen for pedestrian and motorist convenience.

Late last month, the city’s transit maintenance and public works crews removed gum from McAllen sideways in a downtown beautification project.

The city at that time asked visitors to “dispose of garbage, including gum, in trash cans.”
