Hidalgo County COVID hospitalizations still on decline; RGV reports two virus-related deaths

Hidalgo County officials reported Thursday that 128 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in addition to one death related to the virus; meanwhile, hospitalizations continue a decline in daily rates.

The death was a McAllen man aged 70 or older, slightly increasing the county’s death toll to 2,904.

Of the 128 cases reported by the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department Thursday, 88 were confirmed, 39 probable and one suspected.

The majority of cases reported Thursday were led by young adults in their 20s, with a total of 70 cases. Youth younger than 19 were the next-highest group reported Thursday, with a total of 31 cases. Adults in their 30s trailed behind with eight cases.

The total number of cases reported in Hidalgo County is 92,895. Of that total, 60,609 were confirmed, 30,094 probable and 2,192 suspected.

According to a release from the county, a total of 459 cases are active.

Officials also reported 56 people were hospitalized in county hospitals, with 23 patients in intensive care units.

Additionally, the county reported 110 individuals were released from isolation Thursday, increasing that total to 89,532.

As of Thursday, a total of 530,414 COVID-19 tests had been administered in Hidalgo County, with 436,723 results returning negative.

In Cameron County, officials reported a total of 55 positive COVID-19 cases Thursday and one death related to the virus, according to a county news release.

The death reported Thursday was a Harlingen woman in their 60s, slightly increasing the county’s death toll to 1,683.

Of the 55 cases reported Thursday, Cameron County officials noted 26 cases were from facilities housing unaccompanied minors, such as shelters and detention centers.

Youth in between the ages of 10-19 led the majority of cases reported from facilities Thursday, with a total of 19 cases. The remaining cases were four from adults in their 20s, two from children aged 0-9 and one adult in their 40s.

The remaining 29 positive cases in Cameron County outside the aforementioned facilities were led by young adults in their 20s, with a total of eight cases. Adults in their 30s and 40s were tied at six cases respectively behind young adults.

As of Thursday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Cameron County is 42,074.

Additionally, the county also reported 30 individuals recovered from the virus on Thursday, increasing that total to 39,629.

As for vaccination efforts, Cameron County officials said 62.56 percent of their 12 and older population are fully vaccinated, with 74.39 percent receiving at least one dose.

The county also reported that 79.91 percent of their 65 or older population is fully vaccinated, with 88.21 percent receiving at least one dose.
