Paddleboater missing near Port Mansfield

Willacy County’s oldest public fishing pier, in Port Mansfield, still is being used, despite its closure following damage from an April storm. But while these folks hopped a barrier to get on the pier for some fishing, soon, they aren’t expected to have to do that. The county will spend $6,500 to repair the pier that was damaged, including frayed planks along the 500-foot long pier.

A passenger on a paddleboat remained missing Sunday near Port Mansfield as the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies continued to search.

Coast Guard officials in Corpus Christi said an emergency call came in about 2:20 a.m. Sunday about a paddleboat capsizing near the Port Mansfield jetties.

One of the two people aboard was rescued by a bystander on the jetties who pulled the boater to safety.

Coast Guard teams from Corpus Christi and the South Padre Island station were continuing the search Sunday, along with a team from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
