82-year-old man dies of virus at Brownsville hospital

Cameron County has received confirmation of the second community COVID-19 related death of a Cameron County resident.

The resident was an 82-year-old man from Brownsville who passed away at Solara Hospital in Brownsville.

He was a previously reported case. This raises the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 20 in Cameron County.

“This is our second community-transmitted COVID-19 death, which means the source of the exposure was not travel-related nor could be traced to another individual,” stated Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, Jr. “I want to express my sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Cameron County has also received confirmation of an additional 14 reports of COVID-19.

The new cases range from 27-year-old Brownsville man to a 94-year-old Harlingen man. All but one of the cases were linked to a previous case, Cameron County Public Health reported.

This raises the total number of COVID-19 cases to 483 in Cameron County. Of the 483 cases, 247 individuals have recovered.

Cameron County Public Health continues to work with the two nursing home facilities in addressing the COVID-19 outbreaks. To date, the Cameron County cases arising from the Veranda Nursing Home has included 32 employees and 59 residents who have tested positive, including 10 who have passed away. The Windsor Atrium currently has 32 employees and 54 residents who have tested positive. They have had eight individuals linked to Windsor Atrium who have passed away.

As part of the COVID-19 action response plan, Cameron County Public Health is conducting epidemiological investigations, contact tracing as needed, and continues to monitor the situation.
