EDITORIAL: Decisions on school days, times must put students’ needs first

A debate is growing regarding how much time students should be in school. Some schools are adding time while others are cutting it.

Our nursing shortage is too severe to restrict growth of new programs

The Texas A&M University System reportedly has asked the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to approve its plans to establish a nursing school at its Higher Education Center at McAllen. We trust the board will recognize the great need for more nurses, and healthcare professionals at all levels, and give its permission.

EDITORIAL: Law enforcement officers often underappreciated, until tragedy strikes them

We join the community of San Benito, and the entire Rio Grande Valley, in mourning the loss of Police Lt. Milton Resendez. The 27-year veteran was fatally shot Tuesday night during a multi-agency vehicle chase and shootout that stretched from South Padre Island to Brownsville.

EDITORIAL: Bill to let police enforce U.S. immigration laws isn’t likely to succeed

While the primary public focus of Texas’ third special legislative session that began Monday has been on school vouchers, it is only one of several topics Gov. Greg Abbott ordered addressed. “In Fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” Countless Americans learned the little rhyme in elementary school classrooms to recount Italian sailor Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the New World.

EDITORIAL: Autos getting safer, but walker-cyclist fatalities still rising

Our nation’s automobiles are safer than ever. Most new vehicles have features to reduce the chance of accidents, including cameras that enable drivers to see what’s behind or beside them and sensors that sound when the vehicle nears a person or object. Many automatically brake if a driver gets too close.

EDITORIAL: Officials bicker over buses, little regard given migrants

This past weekend the 20th busload filled with immigrants arrived in Los Angeles, sent from Texas, whose name ironically means “friendship.” Like many of those that went before, the bus that arrived Saturday originated in the Rio Grande Valley.

EDITORIAL: Water sharing treaty updates should include climate change

Once again, the Rio Grande Valley has endured another dry year. Once again the Rio Grande reservoirs that feed the Valley have fallen to alarming levels; as of Friday Amistad held 33.7% of normal capacity while Falcon had only 9.1%, according to the International Boundary and Water Commission.
