Just as the school year came to a close, Sullivan City marked the opening of their splash pad with a ribbon-cutting ceremony two weeks ago, allowing children use of it just as the months start heating up.
“The kids, they’re having a lot of fun,” Ozuna said. “It gives the kids something to do during the summertime.”
The splash pad is open from 2 to 8 p.m. during the summer with the expectation that hours will be shortened during the winter months depending on the weather.
The project broke ground in April 2017 and built by S&B Engineers and Constructors. However, construction experienced delays due to engineering problems, Ozuna said.
“They were minor details and finally those things were ironed out,” he said. “They fixed the problems and everything was pretty much set to go and, toward the very end, we’re just looking for, really, an opening day.”
Ozuna said Mayor Leonel “Leo” Garcia really wanted the attraction to open as kids were getting out of school for the summer so they would have something to do.
“Everything just played out perfectly fine,” he said.
The splash pad was funded by a nearly $400,000 grant through the Urban County Program in March 2017, according to interim City Manager Richard Ozuna. The city also received a $37,500 grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife; however, those funds were ultimately not needed for the project.
Instead, Ozuna said, those funds will go toward upgrades to the municipal park such as replacing the current bleachers with aluminum bleachers and add outfield lighting to the baseball park.
