Cameron County leaders and school district officials are drafting a letter to be sent to Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath requesting they allow schools in the county to reopen with distance learning instead of on-campus instruction.
The request is being made due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Brownsville Independent School District Superintendent Rene Gutierrez said in a letter to BISD community the district is working with the Cameron County judge’s office and local superintendents in the county to evaluate the needs of the community during these unprecedented times.
“Together as a community, we are drafting a letter to respectfully request Governor Abbott and TEA Commissioner, Mike Morath, to reconsider and allow superintendents to reopen schools with distance learning instead of on-campus instruction to minimize the exposure of COVID-19 and to protect our students, teachers and staff.”
Gutierrez said the district will provide more information in the next two weeks as it finalizes a plan for the safety and well-being of students, faculty and staff.
On Thursday, State Rep. Eddie Lucio III also sent a letter to Abbott also requesting that the TEA transition to virtual instruction for the upcoming school year.
