HARLINGEN — Whether they don’t fit quite like they used to or aren’t the color you wanted after all, those with unwanted footwear are able to donate them to a good cause.
Tomorrow, from 6 to 9 p.m., the Wild August Nursery and Flower Farm will collect new and gently used shoes at The Market at Wild August.
Wild August Nursery and Flower Farm is gathering shoes to donate to Fetch Foster and Rescue, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit organization that helps find homes for abandoned dogs, including many that are transported to the rescue organization from the Valley.
According to a post made on Wild August Nursery and Flower Farm’s Facebook page, those that bring 10 pairs of shoes to The Market on Friday will get a free Little Bee’s bouquet, while supplies last.
“Help us make a difference for so many deserving dogs and free up a little space in your closet at the same time,” Wild August Nursery and Flower Farm stated in the post. “It’s a win-win.”
Fetch Foster and Rescue has partnered with Funds2Orgs to create the shoe drive, which will help the rescue organization raise funds to continue helping dogs in need.
Fetch Foster and Rescue began in May of 2019 and has helped at least 350 dogs and puppies so far.
“These funds will ensure that we can continue to save and rescue more dogs from being unnecessarily euthanized from overpopulated, high kill shelters, rescue retired breeder dogs from puppy mills and help locally where we can,” Fetch Foster and Rescue stated in a Facebook post on its page. “All donated shoes are sold to micro-enterprise businesses in developing countries.”
As of June 3, Fetch Foster and Rescue has collected about 491 pairs of shoes.
The nonprofit has been collecting shoes since May 19 and has a goal of collecting 2,500 pairs by July 18.
Paw Posse Rescue and Rehabilitation, a nonprofit organization that helps transport animals from across the Valley to homes throughout the country, often transports animals to Fetch Foster and Rescue.
Wild August Nursery and Flower Farm owner Jennifer Wilson said her business sells bouquets to benefit Paw Posse.
“We sell the bouquets to benefit the rescue every week,” she said. “The dogs that Fetch adopts out, most of them come from the Valley as far as I know because we have too many dogs and they have people looking for dogs so it works out really well.”
