A strong cold front will push through the Rio Grande Valley late Friday night through early Saturday morning and could possibly bring much needed rain to the area.
The National Weather Service in Brownsville reports heavy rain and isolated flash flooding will be possible during this weather event. The last time the RGV had significant rainfall was on Dec. 21 of last year, the NWS reports.
The high temperatures on Friday will be in the 90s while Saturday’s high temperature will be in the 70s.
According to the NWS, there’s a 50 to 80 percent chance of heavy rainfall Friday night and an 80 percent chance of heavy rain on Saturday. There’s a 50 percent chance of heavy rain on Saturday night and a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms on Sunday.
Rainfall amounts of between 2 to 3 inches are possible in Cameron and Willacy counties and a portion of Hidalgo County, and 1.5 to 2 inches of rain in Hidalgo and Starr counties.
As of Wednesday, the Storm Prediction Center has all of Deep South Texas in a general thunderstorm threat for Friday night but is not expecting any severe weather at this time. Storms with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and strong wind gusts are possible.
