Eating elotes, ice cream cones, nachos, sandwiches and more, hundreds of residents from the Rio Grande Valley took out their folding chairs and sat on Arroyo Boulevard in Los Fresnos to enjoy the Rodeo Parade where cowboys and cowgirls danced to the sound of music.
The parade is presented by the Los Fresnos Chamber of Commerce and is a way to support the rodeo. The application for the parade says the Los Fresnos Rodeo has grown to be the “biggest little rodeo in Texas” since its beginning in 1989.
“In 1990, a small group of forward-thinking individuals got together with a dream for our community. Thanks to the skills, hardworking people, and great community partnerships, the Los Fresnos Rodeo continues it success from year to year,” the application reads. “Without the rodeo fans in Los Fresnos, the Rio Grande Valley and the country, the dream would have never been fulfilled.”
Cory Zepeda, who attended the parade with her mother, traveled from Brownsville to see her little niece who is part of the Folklorico.
“I’m here because I am supporting my niece, she’s in the Folklorico Ballet, so that’s why I’m here,” she said.
Zepeda said it is the first time she has attended the event and that she had not seen the outfit her niece was going to be wearing for the parade.
“No, not yet! I’m excited because she loves to dance,” she said.
Participants of the parade included the Rotary Club, Conjunto Halcón, Cowgirls Court, Los Fresnos Elementary Conjunto, Lopez Riggins Wranglers Dance Team, Laureles Elementary Mustangs and many more.
Lorena Pesina was at the parade to see her granddaughter and said she was very excited. She has attended the parade for several years.
“It has been several years now,” she said. “My granddaughter is participating again. She is one of the dancers.”
Pesina said she has seen her granddaughter rehearse and that she plans on coming in future years.
“She looks cute, she is my granddaughter,” she said.
During the weekend of the parade, several other festivities take place, such as the rodeo, local band concert series, banana derby, Heart of America carnival and more.
