SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — From bingo to a wedding celebration, animal lovers will be able to celebrate Valentine’s Day while supporting a good local cause.
Friends of Animal Rescue (FOAR), a shelter on South Padre Island, will host two themed fundraising events.
First up is the nonprofit’s annual “Puppy Bingo.”
The event will be held at The Inn at South Padre on Friday, Feb. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Each bingo card costs $2 and there will be bingo prizes.
The event is BYOB.
Additionally, there will be a 50/50 raffle and prizes.
“ We have some wonderful prizes already donated to us,” FOAR Director of Operations Sherry Pindard said. “We will also have a booze basket raffle that we will be selling tickets for.”
Pindard said tickets for the raffle cost $5 each or $20 for five tickets.
The drawing for the booze basket will take place at FOAR’s Dog Gone Wedding.
Happily ever after
FOAR will host its annual Dog Gone Wedding Saturday, Feb. 15 on the Island at Tequila Sunset from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This year’s theme is “You Ain’t Nothing but a Hound Dog.”
Two rescue dogs will exchange vows and get married by an Elvis impersonator, who will be the Emcee and performer during the event.
Roscoe, a 3-legged lab that was adopted from FOAR, will be the groom in this year’s wedding.
According to Pindard, Roscoe was found next to a dumpster behind a restaurant on the Island with a severely damaged leg.
“ We don’t know why his leg was so damaged, but we took him to the vet immediately and we were unable to save it,” Pindard said. “We actually took him all the way up to Texas A&M to see if they could save it and went to three different vets, but they were unable to and had to amputate it.”
Around October of 2019, Roscoe was adopted by his foster mom who took care of him while he was recovering.
“ She just fell in love and could not let him go,” Pindard said.
There is no admission fee to attend the event.
The event will have wedding cake for humans and dogs, a pet fashion show, a photo booth and adoptable pets from local shelters.
There will also be different contests attendees and their dogs can compete in.
Contest categories include best looking Elvis-human and dog, best dressed wedding guest dogs and best trick.
There is a $10 donation fee to enter the contest and there will be prizes for winners.
All dogs attending the event must be up to date on their vaccinations and be on a leash at all times.
All proceeds from both events will benefit FOAR.
