Blue Sunday to host child abuse prevention seminar

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — All with a common goal, several groups will soon unite once again to continue their efforts in battling against child abuse and neglect.

Blue Sunday Child Abuse Prevention will host its free annual Faith Summit Child Abuse Prevention Seminar Friday, Nov. 8 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Isla Grand Beach Resort on the Island.

The faith-based seminar aims to provide child abuse prevention awareness to churches and organizations so they can join efforts in protecting children and strengthening families.

“This is our fifth faith summit and we’re really proud that we’ve been able to keep the effort going,” Blue Sunday president and co-founder Janet Magee said. “It is a joy to see churches taking that leap of faith and learning what the needs are and then deciding how to help.”

Attendees will learn a variety of child abuse prevention topics and how to approach addressing a child’s needs from four speakers — Victor Vieth, Shauna Galloway, Carrie Nettles and Joel Perritte.

“A lot of the time, people feel like they really don’t know what their purpose is, but really, helping kids is everyone’s job,” Magee said. “We just all have different hats.”

Seminar personnel encourage pastors, nursery coordinators, Sunday school teachers, youth and children’s directors and anyone else interested in learning more about this topic to attend.

“Everybody of all faiths is welcome,” Magee said. “Helping these children is all of our jobs and we need to find out what our role is, so we welcome the opportunity to share this with the faith community.”
