Passenger killed when car struck by 18-wheeler

RIO HONDO — A woman was killed yesterday morning when the car she was in was struck by a tractor trailer rig east of Rio Hondo, authorities said.

The accident happened at 9:10 a.m. on FM 106 west of Centerline Road, one of several intersections on the highway that Rio Hondo Police Chief William Bilokury calls dangerous.

“The red Chevy car drove into the path of the truck, which was westbound on FM 106,” the chief said.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the driver of a red Chevrolet Sonic veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a green Kenworth 18-wheeler.

Teresa Arenas Vasquez, 75, of San Benito, suffered major injuries and died at the scene, authorities said.

Firefighters with the Rio Hondo Fire Department used an extraction tool to cut out the passenger door of the car and remove the victim from the wreckage.

The driver of the car was injured and taken to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. The truck driver was not hurt.

Bilokury said the intersection where the accident happened was the site of another fatality two years ago. He said Centerline, Brown Tract Road, FM 1847 and FM 803 are all dangerous intersections along FM 106.

“This is a very dangerous intersection. Centerline, FM 803 … all of them are dangerous,” he said.

The accident remains under investigation.
