San Benito NJROTC to host summer camp

SAN BENITO — As the arrival of another school year draws near, students interested in joining San Benito CISD’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps will be able to learn the ins and outs of the program.

NJROTC instructors will host a summer camp for current cadets and interested newcomers in the portables at San Benito High School Monday, July 29, through Thursday, Aug. 1, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The camp is open to all San Benito High School and Veterans Memorial Academy students.

An introduction will be given Monday 29 to discuss all NJROTC program teams, which include an armed and unarmed drill team, a robotics team, an orienteering team, a color guard team, a physical fitness team, an academic team and a marksmanship team.

Team practices will be held Tuesday through Thursday and there are open spots on every NJROTC team.

San Benito CISD NJROTC Instructor Chief Timothy Wilson said one of his goals for the upcoming camp is that it will bring new students into the program.

“This is an opportunity for students to come by and actually see what our cadets do on a competitive level,” Wilson said. “They can talk with instructors, find out how the program runs and learn what the benefits are.”

Through the program, instructors try to instill the idea that everybody is capable of becoming a leader.

“Leadership is a big focus,” Wilson said. “We try to teach our students that no matter what career they go into, they need to have a basic foundation and understanding of leadership.”

In addition to leadership, Wilson said the NJROTC program promotes health, fitness and service.

“Giving back to the community can be something as simple as seeing a piece of trash and picking it up or helping a local nonprofit such as the San Benito Food Pantry,” Wilson said. “We want our students to do well within their community because if they do well within it, they do well for the state and for the country.”
