SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — The Island’s most recent city council meeting adjourned with cheerful shouts and applause.
During a city council meeting held earlier this week, officials appointed former Chief of Police Randy Smith as the Island’s new city manager.
According to Smith’s contract, he will receive an annual base salary of $165,000.
The agreement is for an indefinite term with initial appointment tenure of three fiscal years based on the city’s fiscal budget years, which begin Oct. 1 and end Sept. 30 of the following year, in addition to the remainder of the current fiscal year.
Smith received an Associate of Arts in business administration, a Bachelor’s of Science in criminal justice and a master’s in criminal justice management from Boston University and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy Session 224 in Virginia.
He said he feels proud he was chosen to be the Island’s new city manager and feels blessed to work with “such an outstanding team.”
“I am undoubtedly optimistic about South Padre Island’s future and appreciative to serve as city manager,” Smith said. “I have worked in municipal government my entire adult life and felt this would be a great opportunity in my development.”
Looking back
Smith had been serving as interim city manager since the beginning of this year after former city manager Susan Guthrie resigned in December.
Prior to serving as interim city manager, Smith was the Island’s Chief of Police for nearly 10 years.
