More than 100 rescues in Cameron County

As heavy rain flooded Cameron County Wednesday, first responders rescued more than 100 people from flash flooding.

As heavy rain flooded Cameron County Wednesday, first responders rescued more than 100 people from flash flooding.

Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño said during his Thursday morning briefing with county emergency officials that he was told there were more than 100 rescues Wednesday.

On Wednesday, county authorities opened the Los Fresnos dome to anyone seeking shelter from the flood waters.

“My understanding is we still have about 25 individuals there,” Treviño said.

Torrential rainfall has slammed the Rio Grande Valley since Monday, with Hidalgo County experiencing the brunt of the flooding. National Weather Service officials from Brownsville said there was three to five feet of water in Weslaco and Mercedes.

Continued rainfall Thursday morning and into the afternoon will only exacerbate the problem as the ground is saturated.

Treviño said he observed standing water on the expressway and on the access roads and urged residents to stay home and off the roads if possible.

As of just before 1 p.m. Thursday, Treviño said the hardest areas being hit in Cameron County included Harlingen, Rio Hondo and Los Fresnos.

“Thankfully, there has been no loss of life,” he said.
