Fundraiser to benefit annual prom

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — The Capable Kids Foundation is once again hosting a fundraiser to benefit its annual prom.

The foundation provides programming for children and individuals in the Valley with disabilities.

Among sports teams and community events, the foundation hosts an annual prom in Cameron County for those with disabilities.

Foundation program director Stephanie Wilson said the fundraiser night is the largest and only fundraiser the foundation hosts.

“Basically, we do one big fundraiser a year for this side of the Valley,” Wilson said.

The fundraiser will include finger food and adult beverages.

The night will end with a silent auction and those in attendance will be able to bid on everything from artwork to hotel stays.

“We have a nice variety of items and all of the proceeds stay in Cameron County,” Wilson said.

Wilson said the prom event began four years ago as a way to provide a fun and safe space for people with disabilities.

Guests are provided with a full dinner and dancing.

Those who are unable to purchase their own attire for the event are able to pick out free clothing that has been donated.

Since its inception, the prom has hosted guests from 13 years old to 50 years old and guests who have traveled from as far as Laredo.

“We have people attend from up and down the Valley,” Wilson said. “It’s open to anyone that wants to come.”

This year, Wilson hopes to have 150 guests at the prom hosted in September.

In addition to raising funds for the prom, leftover money from the fundraising event will go toward sports teams and other events such as the foundation’s annual Christmas party.

“We try to have something fun for those that are involved,” Wilson said. “As long as we keep having donations, we’ll keep putting on programming.”
