Escalating family separation outrage prompts another large Congressional visit to the RGV

More than 25 members of Congress are expected to visit the Rio Grande Valley this weekend as President Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy continues to separate immigrant families who cross the United States-Mexico border unlawfully.

More than 25 members of Congress are expected to visit the Rio Grande Valley this weekend as President Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy continues to separate immigrant families who cross the United States-Mexico border unlawfully.

Schedules are still being finalized but U.S. Reps. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, and Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville, are hosting colleagues from across the country to tour the U.S. Border Patrol’s centralized immigrant processing center in McAllen and a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detention Center in Cameron County, according to Vela’s office.

Members are still being finalized, but those expected to visit include: U.S. Reps. Karen Bass, D-CA; Anthony Brown, D-MD; Katherine Clark, D-MA; Joe Courtney, D-CT; Diana DeGette, D-CO; Rosa DeLauro, D-CT; Mark DeSaulnier, D-CA; Anna Eshoo, D-CA; Adriano Espaillat, D-NY; Elizabeth Esty, D-CT; Lois Frankel, D-FL; and Marcy Kaptur, D-OH.

Additional members of Congress who are expected in the Valley are U.S. Reps. Ann McLane Kuster, D-NH; Brenda Lawrence, D-MI; Barbara Lee, D-CA; Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston; Grace Meng, D-NY; Gwen Moore, D-WI; Chellie Pingree, D-ME; Tim Ryan, D-OH; Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-FL; Jackie Speier, D-CA; Mark Takano, D-CA; and Norma Torres, D-CA.

While the members have questions about Trump’s policy, Trump reportedly said Wednesday that he plans to sign an order ending family separations at the border. This trip is following various visits from other members of Congress, including multiple senators, on Sunday and Monday.
