HARLINGEN — A man who was slapping cars in the middle of traffic as they zipped by him was later arrested after police used a stun gun on him.
Police were called to the scene on West Harrison and 3rd Street at 9:46 a.m. for a concern that a man had been walking in the middle of the roadway and was hitting cars.
When police arrived the man was yelling, acting hostile in public and was pounding on a police car trunk before police stopped him.
The man’s name has not been released by police because he has not been arraigned.
He is facing a charge of public intoxication, police said.
Witnesses said the man appeared on the corner and had been walking along the shoulder and the middle of the street, screaming, yelling and walking in and out of the intersection of Harrison and 3rd Street.
One store front employee went as far as locking the store front door to prevent the man from walking into the business office.
She said police arrived quickly and arrested the man with no further incident.
Police said the man was treated by emergency medical services before he was taken into police custody.
A witness said it was a scary situation.
Traffic was halted while police attempted to arrest the man.
Witnesses said the incident occurred around 10 a.m. and around 11 a.m. a video of the incident surfaced on Facebook showing the man pounding on a police vehicle with his hand.
Moments later, police backup arrived and apparently shot the man with a stun gun.
The man immediately fell onto the street face first.
According to Wikipedia, a Taser is an electroshock weapon. The stun guns fire two small dart-like electrodes, which stay connected to the main unit by conductors, to deliver electric current to disrupt voluntary control of muscles, causing “neuromuscular incapacitation”
The video went viral and had been scene on Facebook by more than 20,000 views only hours after his arrest.
