The Brownsville Police Department arrested a 24-year-old man over the weekend and handed him over to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department where he’s wanted on accusations that he shot a man in the stomach near San Benito.
Sheriff Omar Lucio said his department took custody of Josue Martinez on Sunday and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly shooting 17-year-old Alejandro Dominguez at approximately 4:30 p.m. on May 21 on Relin Circle in the Arroyo Estates neighborhood outside of San Benito.
Lucio said neighbors initially identified the suspect as Jaciel Cantu, but explained that Martinez threatened the neighbors with harm if they told authorities who he was. The name Jaciel Cantu is fictitious, Lucio said.
Apparently, the victim, Dominguez only knew Martinez as “Cuz” and told authorities that he has no idea why the man shot him.
Authorities previously said that Martinez drove Dominguez to the hospital after shooting him.
Dominguez is recovering and Martinez remains in custody at the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center on a $200,000 bond.
The Brownsville Police Department has charged Martinez with theft of service, according to Cameron County jail records.
