Cards, Hawks shine at 32-6A golf/tennis tournaments

The Harlingen High boys golf team successfully defended its title by winning the District 32-6A championship for the second year in a row on Thursday at Tierra Santa Golf Club in Weslaco.

Led by Dylan Martinez, who finished in second place overall, the Cardinals are headed back to the Region IV-6A tournament, which is set for April 23-24 at Republic Golf Club in San Antonio.

The boys will be joined in the Alamo City by Micaela Leandro, who won the overall girls title. This is the second year in a row that she qualified for regionals. The girls tournament is set for April 25-26, also at Republic Golf Club.

Meanwhile at the District 32-6A tennis tournament, both Harlingen South and Harlingen High qualified a bevy of athletes to the Region IV-6A tennis tourney.

Jorge Garcia of South won the boys singles title while Michael Canales of Harlingen finished second.

The Hawks also swept the boys and girls doubles divisions. Hunter Lamon and Victor Ringheanu won the boys doubles title, followed by the team of Billy Yeupell and Chris Rayner. On the girls side, the team of Jessie Alfaro and Valeria Montero won gold, and the team of Kara Lemarr and Autumn Turribiates took silver.

Finally, in mixed doubles action, Jacob Canales and Katlyn Jones of Harlingen High finished first, followed by Matt Cavazos and Sarah Sauceda of South, who finished second.

Regionals are set for April 18-19 at McFarlin Tennis Center is San Antonio.
