Rio Hondo’s Gonzalez has stellar week on baseball field, golf course

Rio Hondo’s Cross Gonzalez had a solid week, multitasking between baseball and golf.

On the diamond, the junior went 5 for 10 with a grand slam, two doubles, two singles and eight RBIs. As a pitcher, in six inning pitched he sported a 0.00 ERA, had four strikeouts, gave up only five hits, and pitched a completed game vs. Hidalgo and had a save against Port Isabel. So far this season, Gonzalez leads the team with a .425 batting average, has 16 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

For his efforts, Gonzalez is this week’s Valley Morning Star boys Player of the Week.

“Cross is an exceptional player who exceeds all expectations,” said Rio Hondo head baseball coach Sergio Gonzalez. “He’s one of the first ones to the ballpark to get his running and pitching in on a daily basis. He’s our field general on the diamond as our shortstop and he has solidified a spot in our pitching rotation.

“He wants the ball whenever his number is called. He had a phenomenal week juggling golf and baseball and the multi-sport athlete in him keeps him on the competitive edge year round.”

Meanwhile, on the golf course, Gonzalez placed fourth at a pre-district tournament as he shot an 84 and finished in second at another tournament shooting a 79.
