Garza’s goal gives Lady Hawks a 1-0 OT victory over San Benito

HARLINGEN — A late goal by Harlingen South saw the Lady Hawks avoid penalty kicks and defeat the San Benito Lady Greyhounds in overtime 1-0 Friday night at Boggus Stadium.

Both teams missed vital opportunities in front of goal, but it was Alise Garza’s lone score with three minutes remaining in the first of two overtime periods that secured three vital points for the Lady Hawks.

“We controlled most of the game and we hit the goal post once,” said Harlingen South head coach Omar Pedroza. “Coach (Eddie) Gonzalez does a heck of a job with the team he’s got and they play well and they play hard, and they show up and play every game. All you have to do is look at some of the scores (1-0 against Los Fresnos, 3-2 against Harlingen). The kids play hard.

“Tonight we played well and we had some chances, but we are just finding it hard to score right now and this was a huge three points for us.”

With the victory, the Lady Hawks sit in second place in District 32-6A, tied with the Harlingen Lady Cardinals at 24 points. But they need wins against Weslaco High, Weslaco East and BrownsvilleRivera in their next three matches if they wish to improve their current position in the standings.

“Right now the only thing I want is to make sure that we do make the playoffs,” said Pedroza. “I think this win pretty much puts us real close to that point, but I think if we can win the next one we’ll be in the playoffs for sure.”

Los Fresnos leads the district title race with 29 points, followed by Harlingen and Harlingen South, and Brownsville Rivera is in fourth with 22 points.
