The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine will host a grand opening of its first student-run clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at Proyecto Desarrollo Humano, 17617 Sabal Palm Drive in Peñitas.
The grand opening of the student-run clinic will begin with a ceremony, with comments from medical students and representatives from Proyecto Desarrollo Humano and the UTRGV School of Medicine. A host of activities will follow, including free health screenings, tours of the clinic, information tables and raffles.
Student-run clinics provide free healthcare services to medically underserved communities. Medical students operate the clinic and treat patients under the supervision of clinical faculty.
This student-run clinic will operate once a month at Proyecto Desarrollo Humano.
UTRGV School of Medicine students said they chose to start their first clinic in Peñitas because there is a high demand for healthcare services, but limited access to care. The students have built a relationship with the community and believe the clinic reinforces the School of Medicine’s mission to provide care to medically underserved areas.
