A Falfurrias man who led Brownsville police officers on a chase on Saturday that ended in Los Fresnos is now facing federal drug charges.

J. Nicanor Hernandez-Gutierrez, born in 1968, is charged with intentionally possessing with intent to distribute 48 pounds of cocaine, court records show. He is also being held on an immigration detainer because he is a Mexican national.

Brownsville police attempted to conduct a vehicle stop on the brown Chevrolet Cavalier he was driving for a traffic violation on March 10 when the driver failed to yield and led authorities on a chase, according to a criminal complaint.

Authorities arrested Hernandez-Gutierrez in Los Fresnos and a search of his vehicle revealed 18 bundles wrapped in black electric tape that tested positive for cocaine, court documents show.
