Volunteers beautify Tres Angeles Community Garden

Staff from the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office and the Brownsville Wellness Coalition invited volunteers to join them Friday during beautification efforts at Tres Angeles Community Garden.

Sunday will mark the 15th anniversary of the deaths of the three children at the hands of their parents in the now-demolished apartment building on the corner of East 8th and East Tyler streets.

Volunteers planted rosemary at the garden’s entrance and ivy near the garden’s shed.

“We partnered with the city to celebrate life rather than death. What better way than with plants and with spring (coming)?,” said District Attorney Luis Saenz.

The DA’s Office held a dedication ceremony in December at the adjacent Tres Angeles Park, where three trees memorializing the children were planted.

The building where the 2013 murders of Julissa Quesada, 3; John Esteban Rubio, 14 months; and Mary Jane Rubio, 2 months took place was demolished in May 2016.

John Allen Rubio remains on death row for his 2010 conviction of the killings. His common-law wife Angela Camacho is serving three life sentences for her role in the crimes.
