Boat advisory, threat of severe storms tonight

HARLINGEN — National Weather Service forecasters have issued a small craft advisory for both Laguna Madre and gulf waters until 7 p.m. tonight.

A strong surface pressure gradient over the western Gulf of Mexico will ensure strong winds and rough seas continue today and into the evening hours.

The advisory covers and area from the Rio Grande north to Port Mansfield.

There is a high risk of rip currents today at gulf beaches on South Padre Island and at Boca Chica Beach.

Coastal winds today will be from the southeast at between 15 and 20 knots in gulf and bay waters. Seas in the gulf will be from five to seven feet inshore and six to eight feet offshore. Bay waters will be choppy.

Forecasters in Brownsville say strong to severe thunderstorms with the potential to produce large hail, damaging winds and flash flooding are possible this evening and overnight tonight.

That severe storm potential covers Cameron, Willacy and Hidalgo counties, as well as the ranchlands area to the north.
