SAN PERLITA — Authorities want to know if cupcakes were tainted after a student was hospitalized recently.
Now, investigators are awaiting lab results after the cupcakes were sent to the Texas Department of Public Safety lab, Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence said yesterday.
On Feb. 23, a 16-year-old student who ate the cupcakes complained of rapid heart beat before she was taken to Valley Baptist Medical Center, Spence said.
“The rumors started that there might be something in them,” he said.
But Spence said other students and teachers experienced no problems after eating the cupcakes.
First, he said, rumors spread about Xanax, a prescription drug used to treat anxiety, was used to taint the cupcakes.
But the students’ symptoms did not appear to match Xanax effects, Spence said.
Superintendent Albert Peña, who has reportedly said the cupcakes were part of a class assignment, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
