Final set at LBA 40

PALM VALLEY — For the first time since 2014, today’s Life Begins at 40 golf tournament championship final will not involve Ron Kilby.

That’s because on Thursday, longtime LBA 40 competitor Rusty Napier defeated the 10-time champ in 19 holes.

On Friday, Napier continued his dominating week by upending Steve Brewer to advance to today’s title match where he’ll face Chris Wicker. The duo will tee off at 1 p.m.

Napier, who hails from Valrico, Florida, which is east of Tampa, last reached the finals in 1997 where he, coincidentally, lost to Kilby 3 and 2.

Wicker, meanwhile, who is from McAllen, began his week with a first-round win over Jeff Scoggins on Wednesday, followed by a quarterfinal victory over 2012 champ Ray Iler on Thursday and then a semifinal win over Dan MacDonald on Friday.

The LBA 40 was first played in 1953 with Cy Derby of Monterrey, Mexico taking the inaugural crown.
