Police say San Benito man robbed, kidnapped woman

HARLINGEN — New Year’s Eve began terribly wrong for one Harlingen woman.

Police said their investigation revealed that Jose Luis Calles, 25, allegedly forced his way into the woman’s apartment and assaulted her. Police said they believe Calles and the woman were boyfriend and girlfriend.

She tried to call 911 but Calles forcefully removed the cell phone from her possession and damaged it, preventing her from reaching 911, police said in a statement.

According to police, Calles allegedly took the woman’s money and vehicle keys from her residence, forced her into her vehicle and drove away.

According to police, the woman was able to escape to safety in the area of San Benito, and then was transported to the local hospital for medical treatment.

Harlingen police officers arrived at a local hospital where the woman was being treated for multiple injuries on Dec. 31, at around 8:15 a.m.

Calles has a warrant and has been issued charges for burglary of a habitation with intent to commit a felony, a first-degree felony, aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony, and interference with a 911 call, a Class A misdemeanor, police said.

Police are asking if anyone has information on the whereabouts of Calles to contact the Harlingen Area Crime Stoppers at (956) 425-8477.
