Longtime educator Margot Cisneros Torres will earn recognition for being named a congressional record award recipient. A local ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, January 31, at 9:30 AM at the San Benito Chamber of Commerce, where she proudly serves on the Board of Directors.
U. S. Congressman Filemon Vela, who represents the 34th Congressional District of Texas, will read the congressional record, which is being presented to the speaker of the house and congressmen. The distinction will also be registered at the Library of Congress.
Torres, currently San Benito CISD’s Executive Director of Human Resources, is retiring after devoting 31 years of service in the field of education. As the Executive Director of Human Resources at San Benito CISD for the past two years, she has been responsible for overseeing human resources, risk-management, health services and parental engagement. She previously worked for the Brownsville Independent School District for 26 years, serving as a principal, assistant principal, Human Resources Specialist and as an English teacher. She also worked as a principal in Point Isabel Independent School District for three years.
“I believe that all students can and will learn if they are given ample opportunities. Student learning and promoting education have always been my passion,” she said. “I will never forget a child’s face light up when they truly understand a concept for the first time. This is one of my fondest memories.”
Torres was born in Brownsville, Texas to Gil and Berta Paredes Cisneros. She is the youngest of five siblings. She is married to Clemente Torres and has three children: Tom, Jacqueline, and Esai and four grandchildren: Nicholas, Merida, Luna, and Zachary.
Torres attended Brownsville public schools. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pan American University and a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Brownsville. She received a Provisional Secondary teaching certificate in Secondary English and Spanish, Grades 6-12, a Mid-Management Certificate for grades PK-12, and a Professional Superintendent Certificate, for grades PK-12.
Upon her retirement, Torres intends to spend more time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will continue promoting education by volunteering her time and advocating for educational reforms affecting South Texas.
