Texas First Lady to speak at Mayor’s Annual Prayer Breakfast

HARLINGEN — Mayor Chris Boswell will host the 7th annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast with a very special guest speaker, First Lady Cecilia Abbott.

The event is set for Thursday, March 8, at the Harlingen Community Center. Doors will open at 7 a.m., and the program will begin at 7:30. A full breakfast buffet will be provided.

The public is invited to attend this free event, but a ticket is required to attend. Tickets can be picked up at the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce at 311 E. Tyler Ave., First Community Bank, 806 South 77 Sunshine Strip, and Texas Regional Bank, 2019 South 77 Sunshine Strip, Harlingen.

The keynote speaker this year will be Abbott, who has dedicated her life to serving others, and believes strongly in giving back to our communities.

She is the granddaughter of immigrants from Mexico and was raised in San Antonio by parents who were both educators and instilled in Cecilia and her siblings a love of learning and helping others.

She earned three degrees from the University of St. Thomas in Houston: a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s in Education and a Master’s in Theology.

Proceeds of the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast will be donated to Habitat for Humanity this year.

Since 1988, Habitat for Humanity of the Rio Grande Valley has been dedicated to the ideal that all people deserve to own a home that is both comfortable and affordable.

Working in partnership with God, Habitat changes lives by enabling people who live in substandard housing to become responsible homeowners. Habitat offers a “hand up” and not a “hand out” to low income families from the four-county region.

Family partners must be hard-working, low income residents who may not be able to qualify for a traditional mortgage.
