LA FERIA — In front of a bevy of friends and family, the La Feria Lionettes saw star basketball athlete Myah Salas sign a letter of intent Wednesday to play hoops at Central Methodist University next fall.
Salas is a four-year letterman in both basketball and volleyball.
“It’s very exciting to be in this position,” said Salas. “It hit me that I’ll be playing at the next level and that is something that I have been working for since I was in junior high.”
Salas has provided stability in both volleyball and basketball over the last three years. This year Salas was named The Valley Morning All-Star Most Valuable Player on the volleyball court and was a part of back-to-back district titles.
This year on the hardwood, Salas is off to a strong start and has helped guide La Feria to a 5-1 start in district play. So far this season she is averaging 16 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.
CentralMethodistUniversity is located in Fayette, Missouri, and is a part of the Heart of America Conference and a Division I NAIA school.
“On my first visit, it was a very family friendly oriented place. They welcomed me with open arms and I felt right at home,” she said. “I met (recruiter) Ben Lopez my freshman year and he was able to talk to me and my parents. I know it’s going to be tough because it’s a fast- paced lifestyle and it’s going to be a challenge playing at the next level, but I’m ready for the challenge.”
La Feria girls head basketball coach Angel Martinez sung Salas’ praises on Wednesday.
“It’s a blessing for her to be able to play at the next level because not everyone gets to do that,” said Martinez. “At the end of the day, it’s all about getting an education and becoming a good citizen to our community. Athletes like her don’t come around very often and it’s something that you treasure as a coach, and it’s always a sad time to see those four years come and go. But you have someone like Myah who leaves a good legacy and the younger kids look up to that.”
