Holiday contest offers a sweet distraction from studies

BY Maria Elena Hernandez

UTRGV students got a break from their studies and a chance to show off their creative skills during a gingerbread house decorating contest held at the Brownsville Campus on Thursday.

More than 20 students entered the free event, hosted by the UTRGV Student Union. Gingerbread house kits with icing, sprinkles and gumdrops were provided for students, who participated as either a group or individual. For some, decorating a gingerbread house was a new experience. A few others admitted their skills were a bit rusty. The same contest was held the day before on the Edinburg Campus.

Paloma Mendoza won the individual student competition while Marlen DeLao and Paria Sanchez took top honors in the group category. Winners were awarded Vaquero Bucks, which can be used for meals and at retail locations on campus.
