With the playoffs just around the corner, it’s time to brush the dust off the old Casio calculator and start determining who’s in, who’s out and who is fighting for the top prize.
DISTRICT 16-4A DI: The La Feria Lions have been looking good as of late. With a 2-1 district record (5-3 overall) the Lions are right in the thick of the league title hunt and a win over the Grulla Gators (5-4, 2-1) on Friday would do the trick.
The winner between the two will share the conference crown with Kingsville King (6-4, 3-1), which already finished its regular season schedule and clinched a share of the title.
After dropping their district opener 35-7 to Zapata, the Lions have won two straight games, outscoring opponents 88-19.
DISTRICT 16-4A DII: In the Division II race, the Rio Hondo Bobcats (7-1, 4-0) have taken control of the district’s title race with their 55-41 win over Orange Grove (5-4, 3-1) last Friday. The Bobcats could win the league title outright with a win over Progreso on Friday. However, should they lose the Bobcats would share the title with the winner between Raymondville (8-1, 3-1) and Orange Grove.
Both the Bearkats and the Bulldogs have already clinched a spot in the postseason, leaving Port Isabel (2-6, 1-3) and West Oso (5-4, 1-3) to play for the final spot.
DISTRICT 16-3A DI: The Lyford Bulldogs and the San DiegoVaqueros are on a collision course with the district title on the line. The Bulldogs and the Vaqueros both stand with a record of 6-3, 4-0 and a win on Friday would give the Bulldogs their second consecutive title.
Another pair of teams fighting for positions are the Santa Rosa Warriors (5-4, 2-2) and the Bishop Badgers (7-2, 2-2). The winner between the two will land the third spot while the other will grab the fourth.
DISTRICT 16-2A DI: In the 2A ranks, the La Villa Cardinals have breezed past district opponents this season. However, this week the Cardinals (4-5, 3-0) face a tough task in ThreeRivers (7-2, 3-0). Both teams are undefeated in league play and the winner between the two will take home the district title.
The Santa Maria Cougars (4-5, 1-3) are in a straight forward scenario: Win and they’re in. However, should they lose to Freer (4-5, 0-3) on Friday then scenario becomes a little more cloudy involving a three-way tie for the final playoff spot.
