Free Diabetes Walk screenings set for Nov. 11 at Harlingen Soccer Complex

HARLINGE N ­ A free Diabetes Walk hosted by Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen is scheduled for Saturday, November 11 at 8 a.m. at the Harlingen Soccer Complex located at 4515 E. Harrison Avenue.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. Free blood pressure, blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c screenings will be offered.

At the walk, participants can choose to walk 1, 1.5, 2, or 3 miles. Water bottles will be given to the first 200 registered walkers.

Healthy snacks will be provided, and staff from the Valley Baptist Health & Fitness Center will be available to lead walkers through stretches prior to walking. The walk is being held as a kick-off to National Diabetes Month in November to raise awareness of the impact of diabetes in the Rio Grande Valley. Valley Baptist-Harlingen first opened a Diabetes Center in 1982.

The center is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

A similarly-recognized program at Valley Baptist-Brownsville opened in 1996. In addition to diabetes education classes, the Valley Baptist Diabetes Program offers free support groups for the community.
