Four-star overall rating

HARLINGEN – Demonstrating its commitment to providing high-quality healthcare to the community, Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen has received a four-star overall rating from Hospital Compare, a program run by the federal government designed to provide consumers with detailed information regarding the quality of care provided at Medicare-certified hospitals throughout the United States.

The star rating, based on a system of one to five stars, is available on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) hospital comparison site located at https://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare.

According to information provided by CMS, a hospital’s overall rating “summarizes up to 57 quality measures across seven areas of quality into a single star rating for each hospital.” Such quality measures include data related to mortality, safety of care, readmission, and patient satisfaction. Valley Baptist-Harlingen’s current four-star overall quality rating, which the hospital received in November 2017, is based on data for the December 2017 public reporting on Hospital Compare.

Based on data analyzed in December 2016, less than 23 percent of CMS-certified hospitals in the United States received a four-star ranking or better, according to CMS.

Manny Vela, Chief Executive Officer of Valley Baptist Health System, said Valley Baptist-Harlingen’s four-star rating is a testament to the hospital’s medical staff and employees who are dedicated to providing high-quality and compassionate healthcare to the community.

“Valley Baptist-Harlingen’s four-star rating indicates the level of commitment shown by our employees and physicians in regard to ensuring our patients receive a high-quality healthcare experience,” Vela said.

“By treating our patients with personalized attention and compassionate care, we show that we are here to care for our community and that Valley Baptist is ready to meet their healthcare needs.”

Roy Evans, Chief Quality Officer at Valley Baptist-Harlingen, said the hospital’s four-star quality rating is demonstrable proof that patients at Valley Baptist-Harlingen are receiving safe and high-quality healthcare.

“Valley Baptist-Harlingen’s clinical team works consistently to pursue high standards for clinical excellence and we are proud of this achievement,” he said. “We remain committed to the pursuit of providing safe and quality patient-centered care, treatment, and services.”

According to CMS, the information on the Hospital Compare website is designed to help consumers make decisions about where to receive their healthcare while at the same time encourage hospitals to improve the quality of the care they provide.
