Cold front a threat to gulf boaters, swimmers

HARLINGEN — A small-craft advisory has been issued for gulf waters beginning this afternoon as a strong cold front powers through the Rio Grande Valley.

National Weather Service forecasters in Brownsville say strong northeast winds and elevated seas will develop from Baffin Bay south to the mouth of the Rio Grande.

The alert for small-craft captains begins at 3 p.m. today and will be extended for 24 hours.

Winds are expected to be from 23 to 29 mph and gulf seas will range from six to eight feet.

An elevated risk of rip currents is expected on beaches along South Padre Island and Boca Chica Beach beginning this afternoon.
