HARLINGEN — Texas state parks are waiving all entrance fees on Sunday to commemorate Veterans Day weekend.
The no-fee day applies to everybody who shows up at a state park Sunday, whether a veteran or not.
At Resaca de la Palma State Park in Brownsville, a World Birding Center, a free native plant walk is scheduled from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday.
“Right now, there are a lot of butterflies and birding people coming out, and that’s one of the reasons we wanted to not only provide the event, but waive the fee for the community,” said park administrative assistant Laurentee Acevedo.
Estero Llano Grande State Park in Weslaco, also a World Birding Center, also is hosting a free birding walk be-ginning at 8:30 a.m. A tram expedition is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m., but reservations must be made by calling the park office.
Park officials say the park is popular with veterans, and that veterans should check in at the park office to look into qualifying for a veterans pass for the rest of the year.
At Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission, another World Birding Center, park employees say they will be hosting a free bird walk Sunday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m.
The Valley’s other state park, Port Isabel Lighthouse State Park, is closed on Sundays.
The Veterans Day fee waiver only applies to entrance fees at state parks. Camping and other fees will remain in place.
