HARLINGEN — This year, the world’s coming here for Christmas.
The 71st Annual Rio Grande Valley Jaycees Christmas Parade will rumble down Jackson Street beginning at 7 p.m. Friday.
This year’s parade, titled “Christmas Around the World,” will follow Jackson Street between 4th Street and E Street.
The parade is free and open to the public.
“We wanted something that would encompass the whole community and bring everybody together,” said Diana Bustamante, president of the RGV Jaycees.
Bustamante said that as of yesterday, 74 floats had been registered for this year’s parade. She said entries are still being accepted at the Jaycees’ website at www.rgvjaycees.com and she thinks late float registrations could push the total number above last year.
“There’s still time for people to register online at the website,” she said. “Actually, we had about 82 floats last year, so I think we’ll have more than 82 this year.”
The Jaycees dedicate themselves to individual development, community service, networking and volunteerism.
Bustamante said that while putting together an annual Christmas parade is a lot of work for herself and the organizing committee of Gracie Longoria, Frank Monreal, Rene Nava and Theresa Ramos, the community’s enjoyment of the event fits with the Jaycees’ commitment to community.
“This is one of our signature events,” Bustamante said.
All cars must be moved off Jackson Street downtown by 3 p.m. Friday
If it isn’t moved, it could be towed
Vehicles can return to park on Jackson after the parade finishes, about 9:30 or 10 p.m.
