Boaters alerted to high winds arriving today

HARLINGEN — Strong northerly winds forecast to arrive later today have prompted a small craft advisory for boaters in the Laguna Madre and the gulf.

National Weather Service forecasters say a cold front will move southward and arrive this afternoon, accompanied by sustained winds of 23 to 28 mph with higher gusts.

Seas in the gulf will be between five and seven feet, with occasional waves up to eight feet in nearshore waters. The bay will be choppy.

On gulf beaches, a moderate risk of rip currents this morning is expected to deteriorate to a high risk of rip currents this afternoon as the front arrives.

Temperatures today under sunny skies will range from a high of 83 on South Padre Island to 87 in McAllen.
