San Benito PD partners with Red Cross

San Benito — Harvey may have just missed the Valley, but it has been wreaking havoc on other areas of Texas.

What started out as a tropical storm, Harvey was upgraded to a Category 4 hurricane and has just been downgraded back to a Tropical Storm.

San Benito Police Chief, Michael Galvan announced Saturday the department’s plans to host a drive to benefit those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

The department has been taking donations over the weekend and sending them to Harlingen’s South Texas Red Cross chapter.

The department is asking for residents to donate single-size serving snacks, juices, paper towels and bottled waters.

More than 230 cases of bottled water were donated by H-E-B and more cases were donated by Mayor Ben Gomez.

Residents can bring their donations to the station or to the American Red Cross Chapter in Harlingen.

According to the South Texas Red Cross Executive Director, Danella Hughes, they currently don’t have a damage assessment due to the fact that a lot of cities are still receiving rain.

The Red Cross is also asking for monetary donations that can be directly given on their website at www.redcross.org.

According to a press release, more than 90 people spent Thursday night in a Red Cross Shelter.

The department currently is not looking for volunteers, but residents looking to lend a hand in addition to donating can contact South Texas Red Cross at 956-423-0523.
