Trial begins Monday for 2007 disappearance of Harlingen girl

A Harlingen man accused of the kidnapping and murder of his teenage girlfriend in 2007 will go on trial next week.

Ruben Torres was in court this morning for a pre-trial hearing. His murder trial is scheduled to begin on Monday.

Torres, who is now 26, is charged in the death of 13-year-old Abigail Estrada, a Harlingen girl whose body was never found.

He was 17 when he was dating Estrada. She disappeared June 16, 2007. During a 2007 interview Estrada’s mother, Jessenia Sanchez, was certain Torres played a role in her daughter’s disappearance.

“I know he (Torres) did something to her,” Sanchez said. “She’s not the type to run away. Nothing makes sense.”

Torres pleaded not guilty and has been in Cameron County jail without bond since August of 2015.
