If you’re headed to the Island this weekend for some fun or to enjoy the Texas International Fishing Tournament the water appears to be relatively safe for swimming
The newest Texas Beach Watch readings of all coastal beaches in the state found only low levels of bacteria in all but one location on South Padre Island and Boca Chica Beach.
The Texas Beach Watch and the Environment Protection Agency categorize low levels as acceptable bacteria counts less than 35 cfu/100 milliliters of water.
One of two samples taken at Isla Blanca Park had a medium level of bacteria.
According to the Texas Beach Watch website, the agency says it reports only on the enterococcus (fecal) bacteria and does not test for the vibrio vulnificus bacteria, which is naturally occurring in coastal waters.
