San Juan man, 47, drowns off SPI

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Park rangers responded to a swimmer in distress at Andy Bowie Park after a call came at approximately 11:22 a.m. on Tuesday.

Park Ranger Horacio Zamora confirmed a San Juan man, 47, died at a local hospital after he was rescued from the Island waters.

The rangers assisted in pulling the man out of the water.

He received CPR and an AED was applied.

Cameron County and Island life guards placed the man on a backboard and transported him to the parking lot where SPI emergency medical services and the fire department were waiting.

He was taken to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville.
