Where you can find sandbags in your city

The following cities are handing out sandbags. In most cases you must provide a photo ID and fill the bags yourself.

HARLINGEN

The City of Harlingen will begin handing out sandbags to residents today.

The distribution will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Public Works Warehouse, located at 404 S. 54th St.

Sand bags will be limited to six bags per household and 12 bags per commercial business.

Residents must provide a valid driver’s license and business must provide a current utility bill from Harlingen Water Works or other electrical provider. Bill must identify the street address of the building.

Sand bags will be handed out until 8 p.m. today. Sand bags will also be handed out from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, weather permitting.

City officials have said they have 10,000 sand bags ready for distribution.

SAN BENITO

The City of San Benito will be issuing sandbags today. City Commissioner Rene Villafranco released the following details:

Sandbags are available to the public from noon to 5 p.m. today and on Friday morning starting at 7 a.m. until supplies run out.

The location is the Public Works Shop on Stegner. Six (6) sandbags per household. However, we will work with property owners that may need more, until supplies run out.

A utility bill must be presented to get sandbags.

RIO HONDO

The City of Rio Hondo will hand out sandbags beginning this afternoon at City Hall, 121 N. Arroyo Blvd.

BROWNSVILLE

The City of Brownsville is offering free sand and bags for all residents today from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the following locations:

Brownsville Public Library System – Main Library Branch, 2600 Central Boulevard. Residents should enter through Main Library Branch from Central Boulevard and exit through Veterans Park.

Les Mauldin Road and Emery Watts Street (near the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport).

Residents are limited to six bags and are required to fill their own bags and encouraged to bring a shovel.

You must have a valid ID, including a drivers licence and a PUB receipt in order to receive the sand and bags.

CAMERON COUNTY

The county is giving out sandbags at the following locations:

  • Precinct 1 and 2, 3243 E. 14th St., Brownsville
  • Precinct 3, FM 510 and San Jose Road, San Benito
  • Precinct 4, 201 N. T. St., Harlingen
  • Precinct 1, Oklahoma Street Public Works Yard (Between Boca Chica Boulevard and FM 511) – shovel your own sandbag
  • Precinct 2, Carrizales/Rucker Yard, (Old Alice and Naranjo Road) – shovel your own sandbag

RANCHO VIEJO

The city will begin offering free sand and bags for at the front of Town Hall on Hidalgo St. Residents must show ID and/or utility bill prior to obtaining sand and bags. Each is limited to eight bags and required to fill their own bags and bring their own shovel.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND

South Padre Island has been handing out sandbags all day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bags and sand will be available for pickup at the Public Works Workshop located at the corner of West Venus and Laguna Boulevard; and the Convention Center located at 7355 Padre Boulevard.

Residents will be allowed five bags per property. Businesses will be allowed ten bags per property.

The site is “self-bagging,” meaning the bags and sand are provided for free, but residents and businesses will need to bring shovels and fill their own bags.

The city will provide the bags and sand, but you will have to fill your own bags. A utility bill must be presented.
