San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy welcomes incoming freshmen

Incoming freshmen – members of the San Benito High School Class of 2021 – recently gathered at San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy (VMA) for the traditional “Fish Camp” orientation.

The fun-filled and informational event is designed to help “fish” transition from middle school to high school and career planning.

VMA Principal Gilbert Galvan explains that not only is the event designed to be a fun event, it also helps students learn about testing requirements, rules, grades, career planning and future goals, including making the transition to high school and eventually, college.

“It was an awesome event! This group was very energetic, and they modeled excellent behavior,” Galvan said. “They are college ready, but we are going to get them super ready for graduation and college. They are our future leaders, the future professionals in our society,” he added.

During their middle school years, incoming freshmen attended classes either at Miller Jordan Middle School, Berta Cabaza Middle School, or San Benito Riverside Middle School. Because the freshman level is a crucial point for students transitioning to high school and career planning, Fish Camp provides an opportunity for students to get to know one another and learn about expectations from “high school life” prior to the first day of school.

This upcoming year, the VMA administrative team and campus personnel will welcome over 800 students when classes begin on Aug. 28.
